I’m a single father looking for scholarships or grants for college.?
I’m really interested in going to college, but really don’t think I can afford even the cheapest of schools. Are there any grants or scholarships that a teenage parent can receive. I’m 19 and had a baby when I was 16. I’m considered a single parent because we haven’t gotten married yet (I’m still with the girl that I got pregnant).
I hope someone can help me find a way to go to college.
Thanks in advance
Ryan G

Go to the financal aid office at the school you are interested in (they all have one). They will help you with find out what is available. At 19 and a parent, you will probably quallify for a Federal Pell Grant. That grant alone paid my way.
You could try Scholorships.com. or you could google/yahoo search for something along the lines of
"single parent college scholorship"
hope it helps!
The first thing that I would do is fill out your FAFSA and state tuition assistant progam paperwork. It will probably be paid for considering your age and situation. Depending on the other parent’s income it might behove you to be married if you are the sole breadwinner. As for scholarships, check online at some of the schools you are looking at. They generally are listed as single parent scholarships, but don’t limit yourself to that. Check the financial age page at the colleges you are seeking and see what they have. Depending on your grades in high school you might want to do a search for colleges that have family housing.
You don’t say what state you are in but the city college system in CA is all about situations like yours. My son is going right now and pays about 60.00 a class plus books. You can get a 2 year AA degreee in many subjects and/or just get your general ed to move on to a four year for a BA. I got a 2 year degree in graphics arts-saved a ton of $$ and then went on to a 4 year private art school to gert my BA for example. My son has joined the NCCC of Americorps too-he will go for a year-To Maryland in his case. Its the domestic Peace Corps or conservation corps-they have a web site. You work with Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity etc. You are housed, paid and yes they work with parents and at the end of a year you get 4,700 toward any accredited college. Good for both life and job experience.
Most colleges will work with you about grants and federal funds-check out places in your area and go to the school-make an appointment with their financial aid office-it will helpyou understand alot. Also trade schools do this too.
Good luck and don’t cop out-this is for YOU and your childs future-education is the best thing you can give yourself!
