where you end up in life depends on where you started from. True or False?
I asked this question before and got 99% Falses.
Before you answer considor this. A kid from the ghetto has an equal chance of "making it" as a kid from the rich subburbs? Now I know the occassional kids from the ghetto make it out and the occasional rich kids fall from grace but on average would you agree that where you end up depends greatly on where you start from?
I started off in a pretty crappy situation but I used the Army to pay for my college, send me around the world, and put money in my pocket. So in a lot of ways the Army has made up for poor circumstances and bad parents. But what if I was colorblind and couldnt join the Army?
Where is the oppertunity then? What about the statistics that children from single parent families are MUCH more likely to be abused and become single parents themselves.
….im not asking for your opinion on this so much as your acceptance of the fact that where you come from DOES HUGELY impact where you end up.

I believe that it is true that where you started does impact on how you end up!! Due to the fact that if your really from the ghetto and you had a bad home life, you would want more for yourself and more for you future family!! But it all depends on the person because someone who could be from the ghetto who has a lack of self confidence, they might think that they are to "stupid" or they feel they won’t make it far in life!! So basically it would be that where you grew up is half of what impacts your life decisions.. But the other half is self confidence!
Yes, where you come from does have a great impact on the course of your life. But, as you already know, other aspects come into play and there are successful people from all over the place.

Yes it does impact it and those starting at the bottom do have to work harder. But I have seen families with money where one generation blows it and the next one is back in the middle class just like most of us.
Frankly people either make or break their own opportunities. It has a lot to do with whether or not your philosophy is that you are going to make your circumstances in this world or simply only react to the circumstances around you.

False,what happens to you depends on U.Yes the richer kid make have better odds but, u can change those odds.There’s always a oppertunity.Everyone gets a chance to change thier life some worry about the what if’s and failing then end up not trying at all.Once the oppertunity is gone more then likley it’s not comin back.
I would have to disagree and use your story as an example, where you end up depends on how far you’re willing to go, the army was my way out also.
True. Though some end up where they want to be, you have to work hard for it. It also depends on the money situation, if you are rich, you can get the money easier. If you don’t have as much money, you need to work harder to get there. If you are rich, and your parents have spoiled you, then you might not have a great work ethic. (I don’t want that to sound like a stereotype. Many rich kids have to work just as hard for the money because their parents are smarter and don’t give money out like breath mints) Some have connections, some have the money, but you really need the heart and the drive to get where you want to go.
Interesting. Recent studies suggest that there are less and less rags to riches stories. In these days and times, being from a poor, socioeconomic environment usually means that the individual will more often than not remain in that environment. Here’s a classic city where this occurs: Alcoa, TN. Blacks were brought their during the "aluminum boom" to work the boiler rooms at the Aluminum Company of America. ALCOA felt that the blacks would be able to withstand the high temperatures of the boiler rooms. They built a small black community called "Hall-Oldfield Community" and nearly every black in that town worked for Alcoa. Well as the years progressed and America turned away from aluminum to plastic, they eventually laid nearly every black employee off. Jobs were scarce, individuals turned to selling drugs, prostitution, and other crimes to maintain their household. Marriage is rare, children born out of wedlock to teenage mothers is commonplace, and the racial tension there is so thick you can cut it with a knife. Many children born to parents there do not achieve higher than a high school education, go on to become single parents, live a life of crime, or become drug addicts. It is truly sad indeed.
where you end up depends on where you want to go and how much time and discipline you are willing to invest. It also depends on your level of optimism and how you meet the obstacles and challenges you are bound to encounter. If you have a clear goal and a well thought out plan and the ability to adapt and be open to learn from your mistakes as you go……..you can accomplish anything you set out to do…..no matter where you came from.You must also love yourself and know that you are worthy and capable of beating all odds.
I understand what you are saying but point out that individual choices and the paths we choose as adolescents and adults determine where we end up. Rich kids go to jail too, ghetto kids can become business leaders, senators and congressmen…or simply live in self respect. It is a case of nurture or nature…and that argument has gone on for years. I like to think that the individual can overcome societal obstacles that are place in their way to succeed in life…whatever their individual view of success is.We are only limited(as humans) by our lack of vision, determination and will power. Sure as you mention above, its harder for some people, but what about well to do children that are not encouraged or led? When do we stop blaming our parents neighbourhoods and government and start to take responsibility for our actions and our lives? This is called maturity.

On average I guess I would agree but it doesn’t rule at the "making it" possibility. And if you were color blind and couldn’t join the army than you could have applied for financial aid, do scholarship searches, government grants…etc, etc for college. The trick to "making it" is knowing how to find "it". That’s where low income families lose, they lack the experience in teaching their kids the trick to finding "it".
In America we like to think that we all at least have an equal opportunity to make it. And we do have an opportunity but it is by no means equal. There are plenty of factors stacked against a kid from poor socioeconomic circumstances. Typically poor parenting, poor schools, lack of role models, lack of contacts to network with, no opportunity to travel beyond their own neighborhood, a dog-eat-dog environment, pervasive living for the moment rather than making long term incremental planning, and possibly sheer basic smarts. Despite these set-back there still is an opportunity to get it right and do well. There are many programs to help those who are in a position to take advantage of them. Medical schools practically fall over one another to admit minority students who qualify. It is not handed to anyone, but remains possible.
