Why do the nation’s leaders ignore the impact of strong families on academic achievement?
I keep seeing these statistics regarding the achievement gap between African-American and white children. It frustrates me that the impact of the family is ignored. 75% of African-American children grow up in single-parent homes. Children with one parent are more likely to live in poverty. Poverty impacts performance. Why this is never addressed? Asian children often live in the inner city, but perform well in school. This is due to stronger families and emphasis on education. Until we are honest; risking be called racist, we will never solve the problem. A tree cannot grow with damaged roots!

I don’t think leaders ignore it, but there’s not a whole lot they can do about the problem. It comes down to the families themselves and unfortunately, many black families don’t stress education. My parents did, but on the flip side there were a lot of black kids at my school who felt being cool was more important.
I am not an African American but I know many black people who do well and better than white kids.I am black and I know I do better than some of my white classmates. I don’t let statistics get me down! In the UK we have the same kind of statistics and it makes people think all black kids are dumb.
